DESCRIPTION:Dr. Richard Alley\, is an Evan Pugh University Professor in the Department of Geosciences and is a leader of the Penn State Ice and Climate Research Center. His research has taken him to Antarctica\, Greenland\, Alaska and just about everywhere there is ice. Dr. Alley is a frequent speaker to both scientific and general audiences and has authored “The Two Mile Time Machine” (explaining ice cores) and many scientific papers. He is a presenter of the PBS miniseries “Earth: The Operators’ Manual”.The risks of climate change are well-documented\, with the potential for underestimated dangers and tipping points—thresholds that\, once crossed\, can trigger rapid\, irreversible changes. For example\, while sea-level rise is expected as oceans warm and ice melts\, surpassing certain thresholds could accelerate Antarctic ice loss\, dramatically increasing sea levels. Similarly\, wildfires could transform ecosystems like the Brazilian rainforest into grasslands\, and disruptions in ocean circulation may occur. Given these risks\, the benefits of transitioning to a sustainable energy system are likely even greater than widely recognized.This program is free and open to the public.

A self-proclaimed “Jack of all trades\,” Jackie’s work has centered around her passions for books\, the natural world\, and physical well-being. Her experience spans roles in sustainable agriculture\, forestry\, solar design\, and education\, as well as serving in various community-based environmental and wellness initiatives. Jackie brings a holistic and deeply informed perspective to the conversation.Join us for an evening of reflection and discussion as we explore climate racism—how systemic racism intersects with the climate crisis. We’ll begin with guiding questions and short video clips to help define the topic\, followed by a group discussion. The program will also include a global perspective on who produces and who suffers from carbon emissions\, a visual map of this imbalance\, and powerful footage from affected communities around the world and in Pennsylvania. DESCRIPTION:Dr. Brian King is Professor and Head of the Department of Geography at Penn State. His research\, teaching\, and outreach focus on livelihoods\, conservation and development\, environmental change\, and human health. He holds affiliations across the university\, including with the Population Research Institute\, the Earth and Environmental Systems Institute\, the School of International Affairs\, and the Consortium to Combat Substance Abuse.Dr. King is also an honorary research associate with the African Climate and Development Initiative at the University of Cape Town and was selected as a National Academy of Sciences Kavli Fellow in 2017. In addition\, he serves as the Nature and Society editor for The Annals of the American Association of Geographers.In this talk\, Dr. King will examine how climate change is reshaping human health\, from heat exposure and food insecurity to extreme weather events\, with attention to uneven impacts and community resilience.This program is free and open to the public.
