Wellness at Foxdale Village: Continuing to Learn and Grow

At Foxdale Village, wellness is much more than exercise. To us, wellness is about taking care of the entire body: mentally, physically and spiritually. It’s about enrichment and continuing to grow through all phases of your life. It’s about choosing to be more active and involved. We offer activities that focus on all of these areas.

Intellectual Wellness

Intellectual WellnessOpportunities abound for lifelong learning at Foxdale. Nearby Penn State has a "Go Sixty" program, which accepts senior citizens free of charge for registration in its classes on a space available basis, and the university's Road scholar programs are open to seniors at a reduced "commuter" rate. Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Penn State provides a variety of educational and social activities that accentuate the joy of learning and personal fulfillment. We have regularly scheduled lectures, musical performances and enrichment programs in our auditorium. And you’ll have access to some of the best music, dance, theatre, and other performances at Penn State.

You can explore your creative side in our art studio, needlework room, or woodshop. Or maybe you’d just like to visit our on-site art gallery, which features changing displays and receptions for artists. If you like to write, you could join the writing group that publishes Miscellany, Foxdale’s literary magazine. If you like to sing, we also have a Foxdale chorus.

Social Wellness

Social WellnessAt Foxdale, you can choose to be involved as you like. There are opportunities for volunteerism – both at Foxdale and in the State College area. Some residents are involved with Habitat for Humanity, Red Cross, the League of Women Voters, the Retired Senior Volunteer Program – to name just a few organizations. Some residents enjoy intergenerational activities and volunteer at the Friends School next door, where they serve as reading buddies for students. The choice is up to you. Or maybe you’d like to get involved with the Foxdale Residents Association, or volunteer in the Foxdale Library or Gift Shop. Better yet, maybe you’d just like to join a resident-run reading group, bridge or puzzle group. Through the neighborhood layout of our campus, there are plenty of opportunities for interaction with other residents.

Physical Wellness

Physical WellnessFoxdale has plenty of ways for you to maintain physical wellness. You can take advantage of the Fitness Room and its exercise equipment. Or you may want to take a class with our full-time exercise specialist. Weekly classes include: Building Muscle Strength and Balance, CORE Strengthening and Flexibility, and Water Walking (held at the YMCA). Some residents also lead classes in Tai Chi and Qui Jong. We also offer open memberships to the YMCA, which is less than one mile away. Foxdale also has a one-mile, marked walking path that runs throughout the gardens of the community. If you ever need it, physical, occupational and rehab therapy are also available at Foxdale.

Spiritual Wellness

There are many opportunities to explore your spiritual side here at Foxdale and in the larger State College community. Many of our residents participate in activites at area churches. Also a group of Quaker residents meets weekly in the community building. Each week, we hold a non-denominational worship service that offers residents time for personal reflection and spirituality. Pastors from area churches lead these services. There are Bible study groups that meet regularly at Foxdale. You’ll also find our Quaker philosophy throughout every aspect of Foxdale Village.
